November Parenting Tip: Bedtime Routine

Reading to your children is a wonderful parenting tool for bonding, bedtime routines, teaching and more, but if your kids are like mine, they enjoy reading the same book over and over and over again.  While I love reading to them and spending that time with them, it can get a bit monotonous, so I decided to mix things up a bit in my house.

In addition to reading to my boys (because it’s such an important activity), we have also added storytelling to our bedtime routine.  It’s really fun because you can get as creative as you want and involve the children.  Some nights I will tell the entire story, other nights I will start the story off and then we will go around the room and each contribute a word or an entire sentence, and other nights, they will tell me stories.  We end up laughing and coming up with the most hilarious tales.  On days when I want to emphasize a certain manner or behavior, I use my story as a learning lesson. The ideas are endless!  There are a few favorites my boys have but even if I tell the same story every night, I always change a few elements to keep it interesting.

Not only is storytelling great at bedtime, but it is useful any time!  We have a long drive to school in the morning and I use that time to talk with my children, laugh with them and bond.  The minute we get on the road, I hear “Mommy, tell us a story”.  Before we know it, our 25 minute drive is over and the kids are smiling and in a great mood for school.  When I pull away from the drop off line, I am feeling connected to them and satisfied as a parent, which starts my day off right as well.

There are no limits to how we can connect with our children and whether it’s storytelling, reading or playing, our children will remember the time we shared with them and how special it was!

Thanks for reading and I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, fun and lots of food!
